A Bold Personal Question

Was your name written in the Book of Life before the foundation of the world?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

You may think this a very strange question, or perhaps one no man could answer. However, it is a biblical question and it is one that can be answered. By God’s grace, I know my name was written in THE BOOK OF LIFE before the world began.

Revelation 13:8 speaks of those whose names were not written in the book of life worshiping the beast. “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Revelation 19:20 says they shall all be cast into the lake of fire. “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

Again, Revelation 17:8 speaks of these people whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world. “The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.”

Whatever you may not understand about this issue, there are four things you can and should clearly understand.

FIRST: There were actually some names written in the book of life, before the foundation of the world. If this were not true, John, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, would have been suggesting a falsehood, by speaking of those whose names were not so written. Speaking of some names which were not written, clearly implies that some names were written. Not only so, but if no names were written, all people would fall into the category of Revelation 13:8, 17:8 and 19:20, and all people would go to hell. Not a single one would go to heaven.

SECONDLY: Some names were not written in this book of life, before the foundation of the world, for the scripture clearly speaks of them. “A New name written down in Glory” would not help you. Any such name would have been written too late to help. It is my prayer that you don’t think of your name this way.

THIRDLY: Your name necessarily falls into one of these two categories. Either your name was written in this book of life before the foundation of the world or it was not. You cannot find another possible category in which to place your name. It was, or it was not!

FOURTHLY: If your name was not written in the book of life before the foundation of the world, you are in a terrible and hopeless predicament. If I did not know about my name, and if there was any way I could discover which was the case with me, I would not rest until I knew. I hope you won’t, no matter what any one says, YOU CAN know.

Someone might argue that these two categories apply only to the people upon the earth when the antichrist, the beast, comes upon the prophetic scene. Let it be understood that their vile activity is motivated by nothing more or different from that of the unbelievers in John 1:10-11, “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” He says in John 3:19, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” There have been, in every age, these two, and none but these two, categories of men.

The first category is the sons of Adam. This includes all natural men. They are described in Romans 5:12. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” They are all sinners, they are all guilty, they are all condemned, they are all by nature children of wrath. This is clearly stated in Ephesians 2:1-3. “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”

The only hope for any of Adam’s fallen race is in being born of God. Notice the clear description of them, by the Lord Jesus Christ, in John 1:13. “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” Note His statement of this necessity in John 3:3. “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

The natural man has neither the desire nor the ability to escape this prison house of sin. Hear Christ’s statements on this matter. John 5:40 says “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” John 6:44 says “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” And again, John 10:26 says “But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.”

The second category of men is confined to the objects of God’s sovereign grace. They are His own “sheep.” John 10:26 says “But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.” John 10:15 says “As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:27 says “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” And again, John 17:2 “As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.”

These shall all be brought to Him by grace. Notice the Bible statement of this truth in John 10:16. “ And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” Notice John 6:37 “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

Now I bring you back to the great, original question. Was your name written in the book of life before the foundation of the world? Are you one of His sheep that must be brought? Are you one of those given to Christ by the Father? There are some who just hate the very existence of these questions, but that is to their own shame and eternal sorrow. These are Bible questions. They are proper questions, of eternal importance, that will not go away. They must, and yes, they will finally be answered.

I hope and pray that you are now asking, “How can I know if my name is written? How can I know if I am His sheep, if I am given to Christ by the Father?” The answer is very simple. In John 6:37, our Lord said, “All the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” It is that simple. Have you genuinely come to Jesus Christ? If not, will you come to Him? I am not asking if you are willing to pray a prayer, be baptized, join a church, or activate some human “Plan Of Salvation.” Nor am I asking if you want to go to heaven when you die. I am asking if you will unreservedly come to Christ. You must come to Him just as He is. He is Lord and God. He is the only Savior. He is the only way. You cannot make Him “Lord of your life” or of anything else. God has already made Him what He is. You can only surrender to Him. To try to come to Him in any other way is mockery, flowing out of rebellion, self-pride, self-confidence and unbelief. Repent of all that, and “…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved…” (Act 16:31)

Only the disposition, and I pray the compulsion, to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, can answer the great question of this tract, but that can assure you, that your name was written in the book of life before the foundation of the world.

If you can lay this aside and forget it, you have no reason to believe your name is and has always been in the book of life. But if your heart is saying, now, I will arise and go to Jesus, indeed, I feel that I must go to Jesus, with all of my heart I want to go to Jesus, I have wonderful news for you. The Master has come and is calling for you. You may, for a moment, draw back in doubt and say, “But is there hope for a sinner like me?” I will answer you in the words of my Lord, in Revelation 22:17, “… And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Come unreservedly to Him, He never turns a repentant sinner away.
